The AfD has won a state election in Thuringia for the first time. So how should we deal with the party, which is classified as right-wing extremist? BSW boss Wagenknecht has an opinion on this.

BSW chairwoman Sahra Wagenknecht is calling for fair treatment of the AfD, which won the state elections in Thuringia. Anything else would strengthen the AfD further, Wagenknecht told the newspapers of the Funke Media Group in Thuringia (Saturday). “If the only common denominator of established politics is to keep the AfD out and to beat them up, the AfD will become even stronger.”

The Thuringian BSW regional association, like all other parties, has ruled out cooperation with the AfD in the state parliament. The BSW had decided not to enter into any cooperation with the AfD in the form of a coalition, a toleration or a joint parliamentary initiative.

The AfD is classified as proven right-wing extremist by the Thuringian Office for the Protection of the Constitution and is being monitored.

It is not yet clear whether the BSW in Thuringia would vote for an AfD state parliament president. BSW state chairwoman Katja Wolf announced a closed meeting of the new parliamentary group next week, which will also address this issue. As the strongest parliamentary group in the state parliament, the AfD has the right to propose candidates for the office of president in parliament.

Wagenknecht could imagine that an AfD politician could also become state parliament president. However, only if he does not come from the circle of AfD state chairman Björn Höcke. “We will not vote for a right-wing extremist, but also not for someone whose candidacy has nothing more to offer than a party deal to oust the AfD. I hope for a candidate of stature whose election can be convincingly justified,” Wagenknecht told the Funke newspapers.

Brandenburg’s BSW state chairman Robert Crumbach also told t-online that he does not rule out supporting AfD proposals: “If we believe a proposal is correct in substance, then we will agree to it.” Crumbach, like Wagenknecht, rules out a coalition with the AfD, which is also classified in Brandenburg by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a suspected right-wing extremist case.
