CDU leader Friedrich Merz has forbidden the party leadership from publicly discussing possible coalitions. This also applies to the question of cooperation with Sahra Wagenknecht.

CDU party leader Friedrich Merz has banned the federal executive board from discussing possible coalition partners before the state elections in September. This particularly applies to the discussion about a possible collaboration with Sahra Wagenknecht and her new party BSW. This ban also applies to public appearances and TV debates. The ban applies until after the state elections in September. “Bild” was the first to report this.

Merz wants to prevent potential CDU voters in Brandenburg from being put off by speculation about a cooperation with Wagenknecht. The decision was made in internal consultations of the CDU executive committee. According to some state chairmen, this step could help to avoid unnecessary public strategy debates, as “Bild” writes.

Saxony’s CDU representative Michael Kretschmer demonstratively did not take part in the discussions and sent a representative. He believes that planning behind closed doors is of little help. Other state leaders, however, support Merz’s approach and advocate the muzzle as a tactical advantage. Influential state leaders, however, doubt whether the ban can be adhered to.
