Increasing the capacity of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway to 5 million tons can be completed before the end of April 2024, Day.Az reported on Monday with reference to information from the chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC Rovshan Rustamov on social networks.

“There is an ambitious goal to complete the construction of the BTK with expanded capacity in April 2024. These efforts not only emphasize our commitment to promoting global trade, but also strengthen Azerbaijan’s role as a key link in the international transport chain,” Rustamov emphasized.

He noted that up to 95 percent of the work carried out towards the complete modernization of the road has already been completed, “despite such difficulties as work at an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level in a certain section, and temperatures down to minus 30 in winter.”

“The project will not only allow transporting up to 5 million tons of cargo per year, but will also strengthen cooperation between Azerbaijan Railways and the railway departments of Georgia and Turkey to increase the efficiency of mutual activities,” the head of Azerbaijan Railways noted on social networks.

Let us recall that earlier, during 2018-23, the BTK could transport no more than 1-1.5 million tons of cargo per year, and to increase capacity, five stages of work were carried out on the territory of three states.
