What impact does the non-face-to-face format of the Billboard Music Awards have on artists and fans?
Interview: Time.news Editor with Music Industry expert
Editor (E): Welcome to Time.news! Today, we have the pleasure of discussing the recently held 2024 Billboard Music Awards with a leading expert in the music industry, Dr. Emily Carter. Thank you for joining us, Dr. Carter.
Dr. Carter (C): Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to be here.
E: Let’s dive right in. the 2024 Billboard Music Awards were held on the 13th in a non-face-to-face format, continuing the trend we saw last year. What are your thoughts on this format? Is it benefiting the industry or detracting from the experience?
C: The non-face-to-face format certainly presents unique challenges and opportunities. On one hand, it allows for wider global accessibility, enabling fans from all over the world to watch the ceremony without geographical limitations. However, it also loses some of the excitement and spontaneity of a live event, like the electric atmosphere of an audience cheering for their favorite artists. It’s a balance between safety and the traditional fan experience.
E: That’s a great point.Speaking of artists, this year Jungkook from BTS was nominated in the ‘Top Song Sales Artist’ category but didn’t take home the award. What meaning does his nomination hold for him personally and for the K-pop genre as a whole?
C: Jungkook’s nomination is a huge achievement — not just for him but for K-pop as a whole. Being recognized in such a competitive category elevates not only his personal brand but also the visibility of K-pop on global platforms. Although he didn’t win this year, the nomination alone reinforces K-pop’s influence in the mainstream music scene. It shows that artists from this genre can compete with the likes of Taylor Swift and other major figures.
E: Indeed. Shaboozey won the ‘Top Song Sales Artist’ award this year, wich was quite a surprise to many. What do you think set him apart from other nominees?
C: Shaboozey’s win is a testament to the changing landscape of music sales and consumer preferences. His unique fusion of country and rap resonates with a diverse audience. It’s also worth mentioning the growing trend of cross-genre collaborations, which can create fresh sounds that attract a wider listener base. Winning against established names like Jungkook and Taylor Swift speaks volumes about his artistic impact this year.
E: Interesting. Now, regarding Stray Kids being nominated in the ’Top Duo Group’ category, would you say this marks a shift in the industry regarding recognition of multiple K-pop groups?
C: Absolutely! The recognition of multiple K-pop acts at the Billboard Music Awards showcases how entrenched K-pop has become in mainstream music culture. Stray Kids’ nomination is significant as it indicates that the music and accomplishments of various groups are not only acknowledged but celebrated on prestigious platforms. This can inspire more K-pop artists to strive for international acclaim.
E: With this momentum, where do you see K-pop heading in the next few years, especially in terms of awards and recognition?
C: I believe K-pop will continue to expand its influence in the global music industry. We are likely to see even more collaborations between K-pop artists and Western musicians that will help bridge cultural gaps. Additionally, as K-pop groups gain larger international followings, we can expect to see them dominating major award shows and reshaping the criteria of what mainstream success looks like.
E: thank you, Dr.Carter! your insights into the evolving music landscape and the significance of the Billboard Awards are invaluable. It looks like we have an exciting future ahead for music fans around the world.
C: Thank you for having me! I’m excited to see what unfolds in the industry and how artists continue to innovate and inspire.
