It has been revealed that the electric scooter ridden by BTS member Suga (real name Min Yoongi), who was booked on drunk driving charges, was not classified as a personal mobility device (PM).
The Yongsan Police Station in Seoul announced on the 8th, “The electric scooter that Suga rode does not fall under the category of PM,” and “it can be subject to criminal punishment.”
According to the Road Traffic Act, PM is a ‘motorized bicycle whose electric motor does not operate when driven at a speed of 25 km/h or faster and whose body weight is less than 30 kg’.
This includes electric kickboards, electric two-wheeled parallel cars, and bicycles powered solely by an electric motor. Electric scooters are not included.
If you are found to have ridden an electric kickboard classified as PM while intoxicated, you will be fined 100,000 won.
On the other hand, if you ride an electric scooter that is not a PM, you are subject to criminal punishment and the sentence is much heavier. You can be sentenced to imprisonment for more than one year and less than two years or a fine of more than 5 million won and less than 10 million won.
On the 6th at around 11:15 PM, police were dispatched to the Hannam-dong area of Yongsan-gu, Seoul after receiving a report of a ‘suspected drunk driver’ and found Suga who had fallen over while riding a vehicle. Suga’s blood alcohol level was tested to be at the level of license revocation (0.08% or higher).
