Bucaramanga and Santa Fe faced off in the return leg of the third phase of the Copa BetPlay, in the first leg, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. The match started evenly, with possession shared and no clear chances at the goals of Mosquera Marmolejo and Aldair Quintana.
As the minutes went by, the home team became a bit stronger and had more ball possession than Santa Fe. In a counterattack by the visitors, Bucaramanga recovered the ball, apparently with a foul that was not called, the ball reached Fredy Hinestroza who from long range saw Marmolejo off his line and scored a stunning goal.
After the goal, Santa Fe tried to wake up and got to Quintana’s goal mostly with set pieces that they couldn’t capitalize on. They also came close through Harold Santiago Mosquera and Daniel Torres, but Pablo Peirano’s team could not find a way to create clarity from three-quarters of the pitch forward.
The one who did find a way to increase the score was Bucaramanga. Once again, the play was initiated by Hinestroza, the ball passed through a pivot near the area, it reached Sambueza and the midfielder struck it very well to net the second goal of the match.
Second half: Convincing victory for Bucaramanga
In the second half, Santa Fe came out determined to turn the game around and spent most of the time in Bucaramanga’s area. They approached Quintana’s goal with set pieces and in open play, but continued to lack effectiveness.
After trying and posing threats to the home team’s goal, another mistake by Santa Fe led to Bucaramanga’s third goal. A counterattack down the left flank resulted in a cross from, once again, Hinestroza, who sent the ball to the heart of the area where it found Andrés Ponce who only had to push it in.
A handball in the Bucaramanga area resulted in a penalty kick for Santa Fe. The one who took the penalty was Hugo Rodallega, and everything that could go wrong for the Bogotá team happened in the match. Quintana saved the striker’s shot. In the 95th minute, Santa Fe scored a consolation goal through Edwar López.
