Authorities announced that this Wednesday, September 25, a car-free and motorcycle-free day will take place in Bucaramanga and its metropolitan area.
According to the criteria of
The day will begin at six in the morning and will last until six in the evening. Traffic agents will be deployed at various points to verify who decides to take out their vehicle.
Unlike other days when the transit of cars is mandatory restricted, the Metropolitan Area of Bucaramanga (AMB) confirmed that there will be no penalties, either educational or punitive, meaning drivers will not be fined.
Thus, it will be a measure where the citizen will decide voluntarily whether to take out their vehicle, but the officers will be conducting checks to ensure documents are in order.
“It will be voluntary; we want to break the paradigm that only mandatory measures work, and we want to call on citizens to reorganize their schedules, to plan their trips, and prioritize the use of public transportation. It will work, it is voluntary, there will be checkpoints for individual and vehicle document verification, there will be no punitive fines, monetary or educational,” said the AMB director, John Manuel Delgado.
The mayors have decided that this day will not be mandatory in order for the residents of Bucaramanga to be aware that air pollution affects everyone’s health and, additionally, to promote the use of public transportation.
“The implementation of this day has shown significant figures; WHO has determined that air pollution is responsible for 7 million premature deaths per year worldwide, which could be avoided with sustainable mobility policies, as cities implementing this day have managed to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 40%, and can prevent respiratory and cardiovascular diseases,” said the AMB director.
