In the future, buckwheat may become a replacement for wheat due to its better resistance to climate change. This is the conclusion reached by Basque scientists from the University of the Basque Country in Spain. The study was published in the scientific journal Environmental and Experimental Botany (EEB), Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.
According to experts, the level of carbon dioxide CO2 in the atmosphere has increased exponentially over the past few decades and will continue to increase in the coming years.

“In the future, the use of many traditional cereal crops (wheat, corn, etc.) may be reduced and replaced by cereals that are better suited to new conditions. For example, buckwheat, sorghum, spelt, etc. Therefore, it is extremely important to find out whether these species are able to withstand situations of severe drought, high temperatures and high CO2“, – noted the authors of the scientific work.
By analyzing various physiological parameters of the plants, the team found that buckwheat has the potential to become an alternative to wheat as a cereal. Buckwheat’s photosynthesis rate increases with increasing temperatures, and the plant also tolerates drought better than wheat.
