The deputies of the 9th legislature of the National Assembly voted on the institution’s budget for the 2024 financial year. The vote took place on Monday October 2, 2023 in Porto-novo. With a total amount of 24,788,969,569 CFA francs, the budget was adopted with 72 votes in favor and 28 votes against.
According to the President of the National Assembly, Louis Gbèhounou Vlavonou, the budget for 2024 is down compared to that of the previous year, which amounted to 25,055,356,369 CFA francs. During this third extraordinary session of the year 2023, he affirmed that this budget had not been imposed, but that it had been developed in consultation with the deputies.
Despite a drop in its amount, the budget of the National Assembly for the financial year is intended to strengthen the action of parliament in certain of its responsibilities. Thus, with regard to the budgetary projections for 2024, particular attention was paid to strengthening the budget line dedicated to the control of government action. Promoting women’s rights and other priority areas will also receive increased attention next year thanks to the just-adopted budget.

Management of the 2023 budget praised
Before voting on the 2024 budget, deputies first validated the budget execution report for the current year. In the said document, it was reported that until September 30, 2023, the expenses incurred are estimated at 18,305,892,425 F CFA.
During the general debate, most of the deputies welcomed the clarity of the document presented, with the exception of the elected representatives of the parliamentary group “The Democrats”. The honorable Nicaise Fagnon, Réginald Koumagbèafidé, Koussonda Adjibadé, Casimir Sossou and Assan Seibou congratulated the president of parliament for his effective management of the 2023 budget.
It should be remembered that the examination of the budget was convened under emergency procedure by 16 deputies. 57 parliamentarians approved the procedure, while 19 from the “Democrats” party refused this approach.
