The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, ordered this Thursday to open mobile markets to avoid an unexpected rise in food prices, in what seems to be his latest crusade after comforting the country with the “war” against the criminal group.

This is a program that will be coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAG) to encourage direct sales by producers and importers and thus avoid middlemen in the regulatory areas of the country.

“From now on, MAG agricultural markets will be open every day,” Bukele wrote on the social network

“With this project, we bring producers, importers and traders directly to consumers,” he emphasized.

Bukele explained that “the government is only a facilitator, but avoid middlemen.”

Under the theme “Your money is enough in the Right Products!”, MAG presents a list of prices for tomatoes, onions, cabbage, potatoes, lettuce, carrots, broccoli, peppers and cucumbers, among other products that face price hikes in supermarkets. Costs over 40%.

On Monday, the authorities began inspections in supermarket chains after Bukele ordered to combat the business “mafias” due to price increases not before recorded.

On radio and television, the president urged “food importers, wholesalers, distributors and traders” last Friday to stop “abuses”.

“I will make a call (…) like we did to the gang members in 2019,” when he asked these gangs to stop violence and killing before launching a front fight against them, in March year 2022, warn. managers to traders.

“Stop abusing the Salvadoran people (with prices) or don’t complain later,” he said.

On Sunday, Bukele announced that he will fight the business “mafias” that raise the prices of goods and increase the cost of living.

After that announcement, “two information requests” were presented to the six main supermarket chains in the country.

Establishments have a period of 10 days to provide information on the price increase of 68 products in the basic basket, at the head of the Office of Consumer Affairs of the state, Ricardo Salazar.

Authorities opened investigations into other products in the basic basket such as flour, milk, poultry and oil.

On June 1, upon accepting his second term, Bukele promised to improve the economy, albeit with “bitter medicine.”
