In August compared to July 2024, the seasonally adjusted volume (turnover – ed.) of retail trade increased by 0.2 percent in the euro area and by 0.3 percent in the EU, according to Eurostat’s first estimates. In July this year the volume of retail trade remained unchanged in the euro area and registered an increase of 0.1 percent in the EU.
Among the EU Member States for which data are available, the highest monthly increases in the total volume of retail trade were recorded in Luxembourg (+5.3 per cent), Cyprus (+2.2 per cent) and Romania (+1 .6 percent). The biggest declines were observed in Denmark (-1.5 per cent), Slovakia (-1.1 per cent), Bulgaria and Croatia (-0.7 per cent each).
According to NSI data published earlier today, in August 2024, the turnover of retailers in Bulgaria (excluding trade in cars and motorcycles) decreased by 0.6 percent compared to the previous month at comparable prices. Trade turnover increased by 4.9 percent compared to August 2023, according to the calendar-adjusted data of the NSI.
In the euro area, the volume of retail trade in food, drink and tobacco grew by 0.2 percent in August compared to July 2024, according to Eurostat. In the case of non-food products (with the exception of automotive fuels), the turnover increased by 0.3 percent. In the case of automotive fuels, the growth was 1.1 percent in August on a monthly basis.
Across the EU, retail sales in August rose by 0.1 per cent month-on-month in food, drink and tobacco. In the case of non-food products, the increase was by 0.3 percent, and in the case of motor fuels – by 1 percent.
In August 2024, compared to August 2023, the calendar-adjusted retail sales index rose by 0.8 percent in the euro area and by 1 percent in the EU, data from the European Union’s statistical office show.
Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest annual increases in the total volume (turnover – ed.) of retail trade were registered in Luxembourg (+17.3 per cent), Romania (+8.9 per hundred), Croatia and Cyprus (+5.7 percent for each). The largest declines were seen in Estonia (-2.7 percent), Belgium (-1.7 percent), Denmark and Ireland (both -1.6 percent).
In Bulgaria, the volume of retail trade grew by 4.9 percent in August compared to the same month last year, reports Eurostat. In July, the indicator registered an increase of 6.8 percent, and only Croatia (+7.9 percent) had a larger annual growth among the EU countries.
