/ Bulgaria dispensed with Russian oil and decided to import it from 3 new countries, including Iraq, according to what Reuters reported.

Reuters noted, “Bulgaria is moving forward towards ending its dependence on Russian oil, as part of its strategy aimed at diversifying sources of fuel supplies, as part of a broader plan to enhance energy security.”

In December 2022, the European Union imposed sanctions aimed at reducing the 27 member states’ imports of Russian crude by 90%, in order to stop financing the war machine launched by Moscow in Ukraine.

Bulgaria replaced crude imported from Russia with imports from Iraq, Kazakhstan and Tunisia in January 2024, according to data issued by LSEG, the British securities and financial information company.

Bulgaria is expected to receive 4 shipments on the way so far in January (2024), a shipment of 76 thousand metric tons (about 540 thousand barrels) of Basra Light crude, and a shipment each of 70 thousand metric tons (497 thousand barrels) of oil export mix. Kazakhstani crude, in addition to a shipment of 50,000 tons, 355,000 barrels of the Caspian Pipeline Union blend, and finally a shipment of 33,000 tons, about 234,000 barrels of Tunisian oil.
