The head coach of our national men’s team, Joel Arate, made his analysis of the past European Championship under 23 years old in Sofia. Bulgaria distinguished itself with a full set of medals for men at the championship. Radoslav Rosenov (60 kg) won the third title in a row at this age.
William Cholov won a silver medal in the 75-kilogram category, and this is his second honor after the bronze medal last year in Budva (Montenegro). Debutant Rumen Rumenov (67 kg) won bronze.
“Overall, I’m satisfied, but it could have been better. We won three medals, which is a very good result at the European Championship. You saw that the competition was really extremely serious, world and European champions came. We could have won at least one more medal, but Mikita (Gorbatenko) lost in a completely equal match, and besides, he was sick during the tournament. Yasen Radev failed to take part in the championship, who was also a potential finalist.
Congratulations to Radoslav Rosenov. He played as many as five matches, showed very good physical form and deservedly won the gold medal. His goal is to become a 4-time European champion at this age, he already has three titles. There is no other such case in history, and I am convinced that it will happen next year.
I am also very pleased with William Cholov. He put up a solid fight in the final with the Ukrainian, a complete match for me and I’m a bit surprised the judges didn’t give him the third round. But the silver medal is also fully deserved. I am also happy for Rumen (Rumenov), who won bronze.
He is a young boy, yet to play in such a championship, at this age. It has potential, it needs to keep working to develop. Great run of luck in the semis on him, with that arcade that came at the end of the first round. It was entirely the referee’s decision to give 3:2 for the Armenian. It was an even round, it could have gone in our favor.
I thank the president of the federation Krasimir Ininski, the Ministry of Sports for the support. Thanks to my team, with whom we did a very good job, as well as to the coaches at the clubs. And at this championship it was seen that we have great potential and with proper work we will continue to develop the boxers towards the big goal – the Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028″, coach Joel Arate summarized the situation.
