Bulgaria hopes for gas supplies from Azerbaijan to its regions.

As Day.Az reports, a source in the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy told Trend about this.

“On April 25, 2023, a commercial representative office of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) was opened in Bulgaria, after which the company intensified its activities in the country. SOCAR has only two representative offices in Europe – in Germany and Bulgaria. Meanwhile, the representative office in Bulgaria has turned into a regional office in the Balkans, covering eight countries in the region. This is an indicator of the high level of strategic energy and political partnership and trust that exists between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan. We hope that Azerbaijan will also consider the possibility of further investments, such as, for example, gasification of the Bulgarian regions, supplies of petroleum products, creating infrastructure for charging electric vehicles, etc.,” the source said.

The agency’s interlocutor noted that Bulgaria is counting on increasing energy efficiency and creating conditions for the introduction of renewable energy sources.

“We believe that our cooperation with Azerbaijan should be expanded in this area. The future development of the Middle Green Corridor initiative will ensure access for the South-East European region, including Bulgaria, to clean energy in the Caspian region,” the source noted.

It should be noted that Azerbaijan began gas supplies to Europe via the Southern Gas Corridor on December 31, 2020. The initial capacity of the European part of the corridor (TAP) is 10 billion cubic meters of gas. In July 2022, Azerbaijan and the EU signed a memorandum that provides for increasing the capacity of this infrastructure to 20 billion cubic meters per year by 2027.
