New Delhi: The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India on Sunday proposed amendments to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. It proposes to make declaration of key information mandatory on packaged commodities weighing more than 25 kg or measuring more than 25 litres sold in the retail market. The move aims to plug a loophole that currently exempts such bulk packing from displaying key information such as maximum retail price (MRP), expiry date, manufacturer’s information and country of origin.

What has the ministry said?

The ministry said in a statement, “It has been observed that packaged goods weighing more than 25 kg are also available in the market for retail sale.” Under the proposed amendment, manufacturers, packers and importers will be required to do comprehensive labeling on all pre-packaged goods for retail sale, irrespective of their quantity. This is expected to bring clarity to the industry and help consumers make informed choices.

Public comments can be given till July 29

The ministry has invited public comments on the proposal by July 29. If the new rules are implemented, they will not apply to packaged goods for industrial or institutional consumers. This move of the government will greatly benefit the customers. Before buying any food item, the customer can read the information published on its wrapper. This will also improve the quality of the product. Along with this, the quality of food will also improve more than before.
