Retired Supreme Court, High Court judges and senior lawyers have written a joint letter to the Chief Justice of Uttar Pradesh regarding the bulldozer demolition of houses in Uttar Pradesh.

The incident drew strong condemnation on social media.

In this context, retired judges and senior lawyers have written an urgent letter to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court asking him to voluntarily investigate illegal detention in Uttar Pradesh, bulldozing of residences and police violence in support of BJP spokespersons.

The letter was co-authored by senior court lawyer Sriram Panchu.

In the letter, BJP spokespersons in Uttar Pradesh said that recent remarks about the Prophet Mohammad had resulted in protests and that the state government had allowed the protesters to take violent action against them instead of allowing them to engage in peaceful protests. The Chief Minister is said to have officially instructed that action should be taken against the perpetrators and that no one should have the intention of taking the law into their own hands.

Meanwhile, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has filed a petition in the Supreme Court asking the state government to ensure that no further buildings are demolished in Uttar Pradesh.
