What for a day on Castroper Strasse in Bochum. VfL hadn’t hosted FC Bayern in the Bundesliga for twelve years and expectations weren’t high. After the 7-0 loss in the first leg, coach Thomas Reis only wanted the game to be “enjoyable”. And it did. More than Reis could have dreamed of. VfL defeated the record champions 4:2 (4:1.)

There was an exceptional situation even before kick-off. The electricity had failed around the arena, the tills at the beer stands didn’t work, and there was no sound in the stadium. The whistle was kicked off anyway, also because Sky was able to transmit with emergency power. After nine minutes, the broadcaster showed Lewandowski’s lead in Bayern. This was the last befitting event.

Munich’s defender Süle, who had just announced his move to BVB, also played his part in this. He favored the equalizer. When Antwi-Adjei made it 1-1 (14th), Süle was far too far away from the goal scorer. The goal was the start of a historic half, in which Bayern, now completely indisposed, were to concede four goals before the break for the first time since 1975.

Bochum scored dream goals against Bayern

Bochum played like unleashed, tunneled the opponents in rows and scored dream goals against reserve goalkeeper Ulreich, who came in for the injured Neuer: Locadia scored after a hand penalty (38′), Gamboa (40′) and Holtmann each with wonderful flicks (44′).

And now? Lewandowski shortened again (75th), but the big race to catch up didn’t materialize. A mysterious appearance. And Bochum fans will be asking each other for a long time: Where were you on February 12, 2022?

Eintracht Frankfurt – VfL Wolfsburg 0:2

VfL Wolfsburg also won the second game with their winter signing Max Kruse. With the 2-0 (1-0) win at Eintracht Frankfurt, Lower Saxony took the next step out of the crisis. It seems that Kruse brought the will to win back to Wolfsburg. The striker, who came from Union Berlin in the winter, made the difference in Frankfurt.

Driven by the 10,000 fans, Eintracht started powerfully, but also missed the best chances. Wolfsburg watched the hustle and bustle in Frankfurt for a while and then scored right after the first counterattack. Kruse prevailed on the left and moved into the penalty area. There Martin Hinteregger ran over him. Kruse continued where he left off in Berlin. He converted the penalty to 1:0 (27th minute) – it was his 23rd goal in his 24th attempt from the point.

It should remain one of the few highlights of the game. Wolfsburg were compact and hardly allowed any chances. When things got dangerous, Kruse had his feet in the game. However, Dodi Lukebakio was unable to use two templates from his fellow striker to decide (71st and 76th). In stoppage time he did better and still scored to make it 2-0.

Greuther Furth – Hertha BSC 2:1

The SpVgg Greuther Fürth can draw hope again in the fight against relegation. The bottom of the table won 2-1 (1-0) against Hertha BSC.

After just 26 seconds, the people of Fürth could celebrate for the first time. Captain Branimir Hrgota gave Hertha goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow no chance to defend himself. Striker Hrgota was also responsible for the second goal from the penalty spot (71st). The guests were only able to reduce the score to 1:2 (82′) thanks to 17-year-old central defender Linus Gechter – who had prevented the 0:3 on the Hertha goal line just 60 seconds earlier.

Borussia Monchengladbach – FC Augsburg 3:2

Borussia Mönchengladbach has managed the hoped-for liberation in the relegation battle. After four competitive games without a win in a row, Adi Hütter’s team won 3-2 (1-0) against FC Augsburg. The coach, who was recently criticized, does not have to tremble for his job for the time being.

Gladbach took the lead after half an hour through Manu Koné. 26 seconds after the restart Jonas Hofmann increased, at the latest the goal by Ramy Bensebaini provided final relief (67th). Augsburg’s follow-up goals were irrelevant (55′, 90’+3′).

SC Freiburg – Mainz 05 1:1

With a home win they could have conquered fourth place in the Champions League: But the 1-1 (0-1) against Mainz also keeps SC Freiburg in the running. The guests started boldly and aggressively, Alexander Hack made it 1-0 (31st minute) by averting a rebound from Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken from very close range and shooting in.

Not undeserved for Mainz, who in their Bundesliga history have won against no other club as often as against Freiburg. Shortly before the break, the strong Jonathan Burkardt even missed the huge chance to make it 2-0, but Mainz goalkeeper Flekken cleverly blocked his way. In the second half, Freiburg became much stronger, substitute Nils Petersen made it 1-1 (69th) and thus the deserved final result. It was the 31st joker goal of his career.
