The AfD member of the Bundestag Kay-Uwe Ziegler declared himself chairman of the health committee. This now has consequences for him.

The Council of Elders of the Bundestag has initiated administrative fine proceedings against AfD member of the Bundestag Kay-Uwe Ziegler. Parliament President Bärbel Bas (SPD) announced this on Thursday following the committee meeting. The reason was a “not just minor violation of the Bundestag’s house rules” by Ziegler, it said in a press release. He is therefore threatened with a fine of 1,000 euros.

This is about the behavior of the AfD politician at the meeting of the health committee on Wednesday. There Ziegler took the place of the incumbent committee chairwoman Kirsten Kappert-Gonther (Greens). He also refused to vacate the seat again despite an immediate request from the committee secretariat.

He made his own sign

According to its own statement, the AfD parliamentary group wanted to use the campaign to draw attention to the fact that it was entitled to chair the committee. According to the distribution key in the Bundestag, the AfD is theoretically entitled to chair the committee – but the other factions do not want to allow the AfD to take over the committee chair.

Green health politician Janosch Dahmen said about the incident on Wednesday that Ziegler had declared himself the new “chairman” of the committee on a sign he brought with him. Dahmen spoke of a “coup exercise” by the AfD. Green Parliamentary Secretary Irene Mihalic spoke of “attempted self-empowerment”.

“Disrupting committee operations in the German Bundestag has nothing to do with democratic practices,” CDU health politician Tino Sorge also criticized. The SPD MP Christos Pantazis spoke of “scandalous behavior” that was unacceptable.
