The previous Bundestag Vice-President Hans-Peter Friedrich (64, CSU) also wants to remain in this position, but would have to give way if the women insist on female occupation.
Both women have been in the process of sounding out support for their candidacy for days, according to parliamentary groups. The ambitions are also met with resistance among Union women.
“I refuse that one of the two elected members of the government should be consoled about the loss of her Chancellery car, in which she is now equipped with a Bundestag car as Vice President,” said a member of BILD.
“I don’t think it’s plausible that those of all people who, like Ms. Widmann-Mauz, are largely responsible for the outcome of the election, are now the first to secure new posts. That is pathetic. There are definitely other, unspent women who deserve a chance, ”says one of the group leaders.
The so-called “carpet dealer round” of the regional group leaders will presumably decide on the general distribution of posts in the Union parliamentary group one day before the constituent session of the Bundestag (October 26th) next Monday.
