More than three years after the judgment of the Federal Constitutional Court, the Bundestag wants to regulate suicide assistance again. Can this go well?

Over the past decade, the members of the German Bundestag have debated no topic more frequently and more emotionally than the right to die by one’s own hand. Not that this right has been contested by anyone, let alone by the state. Unlike in Austria, for example, assisting a suicide in Germany was never a punishable offence.

However, the activities of euthanasia associations did attract politicians from all parties. After a process that the then Bundestag President Norbert Lammert described as probably the most demanding legislative project of the legislative period, a majority was found in November 2015 in favor of a law that criminalized commercial assisted suicide.
