Burkina: Trade unions agree with the government for an amount of 45,000 FCFA for the SMIG

Ouagadougou, 22 June 2023 (AIB) – The representative of the Union Action Unit (UAS), Moussa Diallo indicated Thursday that trade unions have agreed with the government on an amount of 45 thousand FCFA concerning the guaranteed minimum interprofessional wage (SMIG ) in Burkina.

“We are pleased to announce that bipartite consultations between the trade unions and the National Council of Burkinabè Employers (CNPB) have enabled the two parties to agree on the amount of forty-five thousand (45,000) CFA francs for the setting of the Guaranteed Interprofessional Minimum Wage (SMIG),” said the representative of the Union Action Unit (UAS), Moussa Diallo.

Mr. Diallo specified that this sum is below what the UAS had requested in May 2021 which was 60 thousand FCFA, but he recognizes that this initiative constitutes a step forward.

He was speaking on Thursday in Ouagadougou, on the occasion of the first extraordinary session of the Consultative Labor Commission (CCT) devoted to the examination of two draft texts relating to the SMIG.

According to him, the discussions within the national commission of the SMIG which will be put in place, following the adoption of the second draft decree, will make it possible to improve this revaluation in the coming years.

“We are counting on the CNPB and the government to make arrangements for these revisions,” added Moussa Diallo.

The Minister of Public Service, Labor and Social Protection, Bassolma Bazié, for his part, explained that the SMIG has not changed despite the increase in the cost of living since its creation on December 29, 2006. .

“Salary is an important element in professional relations. This is why the fixing of the SMIG is subject to regulations,” he added.

The Minister in charge of the Public Service noted that these texts aim to improve the living conditions of workers by participating in the appeasement of the social climate, all of which constitutes a guarantee of productivity for companies.

Mr. Bazié urged the members of the Labor Advisory Committee to examine without complacency the texts submitted to them.
