Burkina’s next constitution will be “totally detached from the French format” according to Prime Minister Tambela

Ouagadougou, January 2, 2024 (AIB) – Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachimson Kyelem de Tambela affirmed in Niamey, Niger where he is staying that Burkina Faso is considering a new constitution which, for the first time, will not be inspired or imposed at all by France.

The Head of Burkina Faso government recalled that the country’s first Constitution was written in 1959, in Paris, by the former French Prime Minister Michel Débré and imposed on President Maurice Yaméogo.

He also indicated that the Constitution of the 4th Republic, adopted on June 2, 1991 under the presidency of Blaise Compaoré, was finalized by Edmond Jouve, a French professor. Reason why according to him, these constitutions did not serve the cause of the Burkinabe people.

“So now, we are thinking about writing a constitution totally detached from the French format which was imported to us,” he informed.

Prime Minister Tambela was speaking during a joint press conference of the Prime Ministers of the States of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) which marked the end of their work which took place the day before.

According to Dr Apollinaire Joachimson Kyelem of Tambela, Burkina Faso has launched “major debates to ask the grassroots people to specify the type of regime they want. “It will be up to the people to tell us how they want to be governed,” he stressed.

“We no longer want to copy French constitutions which are almost the same in French-speaking Africa,” he continued.

The head of government recalled that “democracy was born in Athens in Greece and each current Western country has taken this example to adapt it to its context”.

“Why, they don’t want us to also adapt democracy to our context. If our people say, we want to be governed by a soldier, why, we will refuse it,” he questioned.

The Prime Minister had by his side the Prime Ministers of Mali Choguel Kokalla Maiga and of Niger Ali Lamine Zeine.
