The 41st anniversary of the burning of the Jaffna Public Library was commemorated today. The commemoration was held at the Jaffna Public Library at 9.30 am today under the auspices of the Jaffna Municipal Council.
During the commemoration, tributes were paid to Sellappa, who was instrumental in the creation of the Jaffna Public Library, and to the late David Adhikari, who learned of the burning of the Jaffna Public Library.
Jaffna Chief Minister V. Manivannan, Jaffna Deputy Chief Minister T. Eesan, Jaffna Municipal Commissioner Jayaseelan, Chief Librarian of the Jaffna Public Library and members of the Jaffna Municipal Council were present at the commemoration. Apart from this, many readers and the general public attended.

The Jaffna Public Library was set on fire on June 1, 1981 by a violent group. It is noteworthy that at the time of the burning of the library there were about 97,000 rare books and the largest library in Southeast Asia.
