Burnley Sacks Nicky Hayen After Just 14 Games in Charge

Burnley sacked head coach Nicky Hayen after just 14 games in charge following a 4-1 defeat at Lincoln City. The loss left the club in the Championship relegation zone, bringing a rapid end to a tenure that began with high promotion expectations in July.

The decision arrived less than two hours after the final whistle at the ProAmpac Stadium on Saturday afternoon, where Lincoln City overcame an early deficit to rout the visitors. That defeat compounded a dismal run that left the Clarets sitting 22nd in the table. Burnley announced the news with a terse public statement.

Burnley Football Club has dismissed head coach Nicky Hayen with immediate effect. The board has taken the decision following a disappointing start to the Championship season.

The Match at Lincoln City and the Fall to the Relegation Zone

Saturday’s defeat in Lincolnshire laid bare the poor start to the season that marked Hayen’s brief time in charge at Burnley. The 4-1 defeat dropped the Clarets into the bottom three of the Championship. With 25 goals conceded across their opening 12 league fixtures, the club carries the worst defensive record in the division.

The dismal start includes just one victory from their first 12 league outings—a 4-0 away win against Watford on October 10. That lone high point was sandwiched between draws and defeats, including a loss against Wolves at Turf Moor.

Summer Hopes Undone by Rapid Decline

Owner Alan Pace appointed the Belgian coach on July 10, tasking him with launching an immediate promotion bid following relegation from the Premier League. Hayen arrived with a strong pedigree, having won the Belgian title with Club Brugge earlier in 2024. He succeeded Scott Parker, who departed in April after the club’s top-flight relegation was confirmed.

Yet the transition from European success to English second-tier football proved rocky from the outset. After scraping past Notts County on penalties in the Carabao Cup and salvaging a late draw against West Ham on opening weekend, the team suffered defeats at West Brom and Norwich.

Post-Match Reactions from Manager and Players

In his post-match press conference, Hayen also stated, I’m not going to lose my energy because this is something out of my hands when questioned about his job security.

Wales full-back Connor Roberts spoke candidly to broadcasters before the sacking was announced, admitting that standards had fallen far short of expectations.

We know it’s not good enough – we know the fans deserve a million times more, so we have to get on with it now and see if we can do better in the next game.

Roberts added that performances had been subpar for 98% of the season as the team searches for a spark to salvage its promotion ambitions.
