Ten people died in an accident with a bus attending a wedding party in the Hunter wine region, in Australia, the police informed this Monday (Sunday night, 11, in Brazil), who announced the arrest of the driver.

Next to the overturned bus, emergency crews were working in yellow high-visibility vests in the misty night, as television footage showed.

The death toll could rise, with 25 passengers taken to hospital after the crash, said Acting Assistant Flight Attendant Tracy Chapman. According to her, the police were not aware of children involved.

The 58-year-old bus driver underwent mandatory tests at the hospital, the police officer told reporters at the scene.

“He is in custody. He was the driver of a motor vehicle collision with fatal injuries and there will be pending charges,” he explained.

The passengers were at a wedding together, Chapman said, and were presumably on their way to their accommodation after the party.

“All Australians waking up to the tragic news of Hunter send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of those who were killed in this horrific coach tragedy,” said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The area is being examined by specialized forensic police and a collision investigation unit.

The Hunter region, north of Sydney, New South Wales, is filled with wineries, kangaroos and native vegetation, making it a popular spot for tourists and group tours.
