When it comes to trade relations between Berlin’s economy and the world, the USA, France and China are always mentioned first. These nations are the most important export destinations for local companies. Henrik Vagt, Managing Director of the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce, is nevertheless concerned about the political escalation in Ukraine. “There is a lot at stake for international companies in the city,” he says. The prospects for economic exchange between Berlin and the Russian market have darkened enormously due to the political and legal risks. With tightening sanctions against Russia, it is to be feared that the Berlin companies’ business with Russia will be close to zero.
