Automobile industry has huge potential in Bangladesh market. Most of the cars and machinery come from abroad to meet the demand of this huge market. Businessmen related to this sector want the cooperation of the government to develop the automobile industry and capture the local market as well as exploit the potential of exporting abroad. They believe that the car manufacturing activities in the country will develop if the government’s policy supports it.
In the first meeting of the Standing Committee on Automobile Manufacturers and Assemblers held at the FBCCI office on Thursday (May 9), the businessmen sought the government’s help. FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam presided over the meeting chaired by Chairman of the Committee and Chairman and Managing Director of Uttara Motors Limited, Matiur Rahman.
FBCCI President Mahbubul Alam said that our economy is very big now. As the economy grows, so does the demand for cars in the country. A specific plan should be followed to utilize this opportunity.
He said, we are moving towards Smart Bangladesh. Business has had challenges in the past, still has and will continue to do so in the future. Meanwhile, the economy of the country should be promoted by advancing the private sector.
Calling on businessmen to start manufacturing in the automobile sector, the FBCCI president said that cars are being imported and will continue to do business. However, the import is not lifetime. Now it’s time to focus on preparing the car. For this, someone has to start working.
Director-in-charge of the committee and former vice-president of FBCCI. Habib Ullah Don said, ‘The population of the country is increasing day by day. People’s purchasing power is also increasing. However, people are buying private cars as there is not enough public transport compared to the population. In this case, import of reconditioned cars is accelerating the country’s economy. However, assembling and subsequent preparation work has to start immediately after importation.
Participating in the open discussion, the businessmen emphasized the development of the automobile sector vendors in the country. They said that the automobile sector has a huge market all over the world. To capture these markets, vendor development is essential for manufacturing machinery in the country. Targets should be set with incentives for vendor development.
Apart from this, taking the opinions of experienced businessmen in formulating any policies of the government related to the automobile sector including delimiting a separate area for the maintenance of the automobile sector, bringing changes in the SRO over time, facilitating the import of electric vehicles in the country, speeding up the registration process of vehicles in BRTA, making the banks follow the same policy.
