Pongalur: When the harvest of small onions planted in Karthigai Pattam started, the price went from eight to 13 rupees per kg. In order to avoid losses due to low prices, many farmers set up workshops in the open and kept stock. There was no one to ask when the high-quality onions came to harvest. Many farmers destroyed them by plowing them in the land without harvesting them. Until now, the stocked onions cost only 12 rupees per kg.
No ban on onion export. But onion exports were affected due to increase in domestic production in countries like Indonesia and Thailand. There is not enough money to buy onions in Sri Lanka. Due to the abundant production in our country and the lack of foreign market opportunities, the price fell. The farmers who suffered heavy losses reduced the area under cultivation in Vaikasi district. Due to this, the production will be less than usual this season. At present we have received orders for export and are getting good prices for high quality onions.
Traders are buying at 35 rupees per kg. In Karnataka, the supply of onion has been severely affected due to lack of southwest monsoon. Farmers have reduced the cultivation of Vaikasi, so there is a risk of fall in the yield. In a few days, there will be a demand for onion stocked in the workshop. This year in November and December there is a shortage of onion and the price is likely to rise further.
