Marcel Schmelzer played for Borussia Dortmund for around 17 years. The 36-year-old is now working in the club’s youth ranks – and is now breaking new ground there.
Borussia Dortmund’s former captain Marcel Schmelzer will be assistant coach of the BVB reserves in the 3rd league. The 36-year-old will assist coach Jan Zimmermann from next season, the black and yellow announced on Friday morning. Schmelzer, who has been part of the Dortmund U17 coaching team since summer 2023, signed a contract until 2026.
“It’s been clear to me for a long time that I really want to take the step into adult football,” said the former full-back, who sees the BVB reserves as an “interesting team with a lot of young talent.”
Dortmund’s new managing director Lars Ricken explained that the 16-time national player “with his great experience in professional football and his committed work in the youth sector will be a first-class addition to the coaching staff of our U23s.”
Schmelzer announced the end of his career in May 2022. He became German champion twice (2011, 2021) and DFB Cup winner three times (2012, 2017, 2021) with BVB. Between 2016 and 2018 he held the captaincy.
