“This is a real breath of hope for bilateral relations but also an international confirmation that the Moroccan approach was the only humane solution” to complete the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, this expert in international relations told MAP.
In a message addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, it is recalled that the French President, Mr. Emmanuel Macron officially announced to the Sovereign that he “considers that the present and future of Western Sahara are part of Moroccan sovereignty.”
Professor Heydt, former President of the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe, stressed the strength of the content of this message addressed to the Sovereign by the French Head of State.
He explained that affirming that “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework in which this issue must be resolved” and that the autonomy plan “now constitutes the only basis for reaching a political, just, lasting and negotiated solution”, with France’s commitment to take “its full part in all the forums concerned”, represents “a major step”.
While welcoming “this decision which was expected”, the French expert in international relations notes that “France thus confirms and officially joins the concert of Nations, which for several years has declared itself in favour of the Moroccanness of the Sahara”.
And to conclude that from now on, “the round table is large enough to bring together as quickly as possible all the assets and parties in order to finalize this file of the false conflict of the Sahara, which has lasted too long and this, for the benefit of the local populations and in the interest of the entire region.”
