Byeonsan Beach, where the red sun sinks into the sea. Is there a color that goes better with the sunset that turns the whole world red at Byeonsan Beach than orange?

Byeonsan Beach ‘2nd Pop-up Cinema: Buan Moving’ Opens on the 15th

An orange poster advertising the ‘2nd Buan Moving Pop-up Cinema’ stands tall at Byeonsan Beach. The poster with a seagull sitting on it is made of iron that is not shaken by the sea breeze. It is a seaside sculpture symbolizing Buan Moving, created in collaboration with Posco Steelion.

Last year, at the first Buan Moving Pop-up Cinema, 30 large, pebble-shaped ceramic works by potter Lee Neung-ho were exhibited on one side of the beach, turning the beach into a gallery. This year, a new installation art piece was created using iron instead of ceramics.

The 2nd Pop-Up Cinema: Buan Moving, featuring refreshing sea, red sunset, and romantic movies, will be held for three days from the 15th to the 17th at Byeonsan Beach in Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.

Buan Moving is a new concept film festival that introduced the concept of a pop-up store to a film festival for the first time in Korea. Every year, it selects a film that fits a new theme and delivers a romantic experience of watching a film in the beautiful scenery of Korea to the audience. The official poster for the 2nd Buan Moving, released this time, expresses the surging sea waves of Byeonsan with orange-colored brushstrokes reminiscent of the sunset, revealing the identity of ‘Pop-up Cinema: Buan Moving’.

Jeon Hye-jung, executive director of the London East Asia Film Festival and artistic director, said, “We have prepared a program that will create romantic memories, so I hope you will come running to the sunset in front of the Byeonsan Sea with your beloved family, friends, lovers, and pets.” She added, “I hope that this event will become Buan’s representative film content and establish itself as a global city that people who love film and travel will continue to visit.”

The theme chosen by Buan Moving this year is ‘love’. The 2nd Pop-up Cinema: Buan Moving, which will be held under the title of ‘Byeonsan Beach Cinema’, is ready to meet the audience with three films themed on ‘love’ and various special exhibitions. In particular, actors Park Jung-min and Shin Eun-soo, as well as directors Eom Tae-hwa, Jo Geun-sik, Song Hae-sung, and Kim Hong-joon, the director of the Korean Film Archive, will attend the GV and light up the event with special talks. The opening ceremony will begin with a film music concert by Jeong Tae-ho of the tango band ‘La Ventana’ and jazz vocalist Yoo Sa-rang.

The opening film is the fantasy melodrama ‘Vanishing Time’ (2016) starring Kang Dong-won and Shin Eun-soo. It will be screened at the opening ceremony on the 15th at 6:30 PM. After the screening, director Um Tae-hwa and Shin Eun-soo will go on stage to tell stories related to the film. Cineplay editor-in-chief Joo Sung-chul will serve as moderator.

On the 16th at 7PM, the film ‘That Summer’ (2006) starring Lee Byung-hun and Soo-ae will be screened against the backdrop of the summer sea. Director Cho Geun-sik, who has been recognized for his delicate directing, will attend and have an in-depth discussion about the film with film journalist Lee Hwa-jeong.

On the last day of the event, there will be a rich event. On the 17th at 3 PM, the film talk titled ‘Korean Film Masterpieces through Famous Scenes’ will be held at the Workation Center. Director Kim Hong-joon of the Korean Film Archive, actor Park Jung-min, who has a deep connection with Byeonsan through the film ‘Byeonsan’, and film journalist Jeong Si-woo will be present to look back on the shining moments of Korean films.

The short film ‘Class President Election’ (2021) directed by Park Jung-min will also meet the audience at 6 PM on the same day. After the outdoor screening, Park Jung-min will go on stage and have a sincere conversation with the audience.

The film that will be the finale of the ‘Byeonsan Beach Cinema’ at 7 PM on the 17th is ‘Failan’ (2001), which is considered one of the representative Korean melodramas. Editor-in-Chief Joo Sung-chul will attend as a moderator and have an in-depth discussion about ‘Failan’ with Director Song Hae-seong.

In addition, the 2024 Buan Moving ‘Byeonsan Beach Cinema’ will include additional side events such as an exhibition of Poscostilion’s works, a congratulatory performance, and Buan Four Cut. For Seoul audiences with inconvenient transportation, a free express bus between Gangnam and Buan will be operated on a first-come, first-served basis on the opening and closing ceremonies.
