Cabinet approves 21st Amendment in Sri Lanka

by time news
Colombo: The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the 21st Amendment to reduce the powers of the President of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has a severe foreign exchange deficit.

As a result, it is unable to import essential commodities and is facing many crises, including shortages of petrol and diesel, power cuts and rising prices.
This is because the public accuses President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa of staging a series of mass protests demanding his resignation.
When the present President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa took office in Sri Lanka, a constitutional amendment bill was introduced and passed to give all powers to the President.

Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as Prime Minister as the crisis ended due to the intensification of the people’s struggle. United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as the new Prime Minister. This was followed by the introduction of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, which seeks to deprive the President of the powers vested in Sri Lanka and to give additional powers to Parliament. It is learned that the amendment was approved by the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. It will be filed in Barley.com soon and will be implemented, a ministry said.
