Guilherme Costa, known as Cachorrão, did not achieve Brazil’s first medal. This Saturday, the Brazilian finished in fifth place in the men’s 400m freestyle swimming event, with a time of 3:42.76.
Despite missing out on the podium, the time secured a South American record for Cachorrão. With this time, he would have even won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, showcasing the strength of the event.
The gold medal went to German Lukas Maertens, while Australian Elijah Winnington came in second, and South Korean Kim Woomin completed the podium.
In the morning, Cachorrão had achieved the second-best time in the qualifying round, completing the event in 3:44.23, giving him the advantage of swimming in the central lane, where he had better awareness of his competitors’ positions.
The Brazilian will still compete in three other events at the Olympic Games: 200m, 800m, and 4x200m freestyle.
