The experiment went wrong. A 13-year-old boy had his hand torn off Tuesday evening in Caen in the explosion of chemicals he was handling, reported the Caen (Calvados) public prosecutor’s office, which opened an investigation.

The miner “had his hand torn off during the explosion of a test tube containing different chemicals. In all likelihood, it would be “TATP”, a homemade explosive, indicated the public prosecutor of Caen, Joël Garrigue, thus confirming information from the Ouest-France newspaper.

TATP (acetone peroxide) can be produced from different substances sold commercially (acetone, hydrogen peroxide, etc.). Known to be unstable, it has notably been used in numerous terrorist attacks.

An open investigation

According to Ouest-France, the explosion took place in the attic of the family apartment when the teenager shook a test tube he was holding in his hand. As soon as the firefighters arrived, he was transported to Caen University Hospital.

The Caen public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances in which the young person was injured. It will also be a question of discovering how the child got his hands on the products, which caused his accident.
