Cairo: Closing of the 31st International Festival of Experimental Theatre with distinguished Moroccan participation

During the closing ceremony, held at the Grand Opera Theater in the Egyptian capital and attended by an audience of Arab and foreign artists, a tribute was paid to the great Egyptian actor, the late Ahmed Ratib, and the late Aida Allam, professor of theater at the Faculty of Letters at Helwan University, in recognition of their great artistic career and their contribution to theater and the arts in Egypt.

On this occasion, the jury announced the names of the winners of this edition in the different categories. Thus, the award for best theatrical performance went to “Babylon” from Germany, the award for best director went to director Madeleine Luiza (Ecuador) for “Auto Retrato”, while the awards for best actor and best actress went respectively to Santiago Rodrigo (Ecuador) for his role in “Auto Retrator” and to Hala Omran (Kuwait) for her beautiful performance in “Silence”.

The prize for best scenography was awarded to the play “Macbeth al mossannii” (Egypt), while “Silence” by the author and director Souleiman Al-Bassam won the prize for best theatrical text or idea.

The 31st edition of the Cairo International Experimental Theatre Festival, held from September 1 to 11, saw a distinguished participation of Morocco, which was represented in the official competition by the play “Fatair Atoufah” (Apple Pies) by the troupe “Douze Tmasra7”.

Produced with the support of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication (Department of Culture) for the year 2023-2024, this work is directed by Abdeljabar Khamrane and written by the Sudanese Amjad Abu Alala. The scenography and choreography of this play, performed by Rajae Kharmaz, Zineb Ennajem, Noureddine Saadane and Zakaria Haddouchi, were signed respectively by Youssef El Arkoubi and Taoufiq Izeddiou.

In recognition of the quality of this artistic work, Noureddine Saadane and Rajae Kharmaz were nominated respectively for the awards for best actor and best actress.

In the intellectual part of the festival, a meeting, held in the conference room of the Higher Council of Culture, paid tribute to the pioneer of Moroccan theater, the late Tayeb Saddiki, with the participation of Moroccan critics and playwrights Hassan Nafali, Hassan Bahraoui, Abdelouahed Benyasser, and the Egyptian playwright, Amrou Douara.

For their part, theatre critic Abdelouahed Ben Yasser and playwright and theatre professor at Mohammed I University in Oujda, Mustapha Ramadani, led “intellectual sessions” around questions relating to the nature of the “father of the arts”, his essence, his own characteristics and the evolution of contemporary theatre.

The field of publication is not left out. It has been enriched by the publication of the Arabic translation of “The Tyranny of the Buffoons”, produced by the Moroccan researcher, Youssef Amefzaa.

The Cairo International Experimental Theatre Festival is one of the oldest international festivals specializing in the presentation of experimental theatre performances from around the world. It aims to be a bridge for exchange and communication between different cultures and societies through art and aims to present the latest developments in the international theatre scene.
