The Egyptian newspaper Youm7 revealed a meeting between the head of Egyptian General Intelligence, Major General Abbas Kamel, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, today in Cairo to discuss the latest developments in the situation in Libya and efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis.
According to the newspaper, the meeting comes within the framework of Egypt’s support for all comprehensive settlement paths based on Libyan legitimate institutions, and to find a settlement to the Libyan crisis based on a Libyan-Libyan consensus.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs last Sunday, Egypt welcomed the tripartite meeting that included the President of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, and the Head of the Supreme Council of State, Mohamed Takala, within the framework of supporting the exclusive Libyan monarchy for the political settlement.
Egypt considered the outcomes of the tripartite meeting an important step to achieve the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people, in a way that preserves the country’s sovereignty, unity, security and stability, and strengthens the role of Libyan institutions in fulfilling all necessary frameworks for holding presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
The headquarters of the League of Arab States witnessed a dialogue session headed by its Secretary Ahmed Aboul Gheit, in which Al-Menfi, Takala, and Aguila Saleh attended, to bring the views of the Libyan parties closer together and facilitate the Libyan-Libyan dialogue between the active parties to resolve the controversial points.
University Secretary Ahmed Aboul Gheit stated that holding presidential elections in Libya does not seem imminent, and there do not seem to be any indications of a consensus that opens the way to elections, as he put it.
