by Liam O'Connor Sports Editor

NAPA, Calif. – The Cal Poly men’s golf team sits in sixth place after two rounds of the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational at Silverado Resort North Course, a challenging par-72, 6,859-yard layout. Whereas the team faces an eight-stroke deficit to fifth-place Santa Clara, a strong individual performance from freshman Rafael Bobo-Lloret is providing a bright spot for the Mustangs. The tournament, hosted by Central Michigan, features a competitive field of 14 programs, and the final round is set for Tuesday morning. This Cal Poly golf team is looking to build momentum as the season progresses.

Bobo-Lloret, who earned Big West Golfer of the Month honors in February, is currently the top Cal Poly performer, tied for 18th place overall. He navigated the course with a two-under 70 in Monday’s morning round, highlighted by four birdies. He followed that with a 72 in the afternoon, leaving him at even par for the tournament. He trails BYU’s Kihei Akina by 10 strokes, who leads the individual standings. Live scoring and full tournament results are available on Golfstat.com.

Mustangs Find Consistency in the Middle Rounds

Behind Bobo-Lloret, graduate student Kyle Dougherty and sophomore Nolan Kuszyk are sharing 24th place with a combined score of one-under 143. Dougherty demonstrated consistency, carding a two-under 70 in the morning and a one-over 73 in the afternoon. Kuszyk mirrored Dougherty’s scores, showcasing a solid performance with five birdies throughout the day. Their steady play is crucial for Cal Poly’s overall team score.

Junior Jack Jarvis isn’t far behind, sitting in 33rd place at even par (144). He rebounded from a challenging morning round of 74 with a strong two-under 70 in the afternoon, fueled by three birdies. This demonstrates his ability to adjust and perform under pressure. The team’s depth is being tested at this tournament, and Jarvis’s resilience is a positive sign.

Team Effort and Looking Ahead

Senior Sean Lehman and junior Leo Metzger, competing as an independent, are both tied for 66th place with a seven-over 151. Lehman managed to record six birdies, while Metzger finished with three. While their scores aren’t currently impacting the team standings significantly, their contributions demonstrate the overall talent within the Cal Poly program.

As a team, Cal Poly posted a four-under 284 on Monday. Though, closing the gap on Santa Clara, who are at 276, and the teams ahead will require a strong final round. The Silverado Resort North Course is known for its challenging layout and demanding greens, requiring precision and strategic play. The tournament provides a valuable opportunity for the Mustangs to test their skills against a competitive field and gain experience.
