On Friday afternoon the time had come: After a debate that lasted almost two hours – much longer than planned due to many heckling – the Bundestag decided to reform the Building Energy Act with the votes of the traffic light coalition. In the same way as the SPD, Greens and FDP factions agreed at the end of June. If the Federal Council also gives the green light, the GEG will come into force on January 1, 2024.
The basic rule is that newly installed heating systems must run on at least 65 percent renewable energy. Initially, this requirement should only apply in new development areas. Outside of these districts, the city or district must first carry out municipal heat planning before the new rules for homeowners take effect. Cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants have until June 30, 2026 to plan heat, all others until June 30, 2028. Green parliamentary group leader Katharina Dröge called the law a “giant step for climate protection”.
