Total Solar Eclipse, April 8, 2024

The most notable event is, without a doubt, the eclipse solar total that will light up the sky next April 8. This phenomenon will be visible in a strip that covers the United States, Canada and Mexico, lasting a total of 6 hours, from 9:42 am to 2:52 pm (Guatemala time).

A total solar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon in which the Moon comes between the Earth and the Sun, completely blocking sunlight and casting a shadow on the Earth’s surface. During this event, the solar disk is completely hidden, leaving only the Sun’s outer atmosphere, known as the solar corona, visible. The next solar eclipse will occur until March 2033.

Because Guatemala is not in the zone of totality, it can be seen partially. Later we will tell you where to watch the live broadcast and also some recommendations to enjoy the phenomenon safely.

Maximum luminosity of comet 12P/Pons–Brooks, April 21

Comet 12P/Pons–Brooks will also make its stellar appearance this month and can be seen in Guatemala. It will reach its maximum luminosity on April 21, when it is at its closest point to the Sun, known as perihelion.

This star, classified as “Halley-type” due to its orbital period of approximately 71 years, will be visible again in the year 2095, so this will be a unique opportunity to witness its passage. It is also known as the “devil’s comet” due to the shape similar to bright horns or wings that the comet acquired after experiencing an outburst.
