  • First Quarter: Monday, August 12th
Super Full Blue Moon: Monday, August 19
  • Last Quarter: Monday, August 26

The Super Blue Full Sturgeon Moon

This month Guatemalans will have the opportunity to observe a Superlunaan astronomical phenomenon that occurs when the Full Moon coincides with its perigee, that is, the point in its orbit closest to Earth. This will make the Earth’s only natural satellite appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual at this phase.

This event is doubly special because it is also a Blue MoonThis term refers to the third of four Full Moons in a single astronomical season. Since seasons typically have only three Full Moons, the presence of a fourth within the same period is a relatively rare phenomenon.

The Sturgeon Moon is the name given by Native Americans to the only natural satellite of the Earth that occurs during the eighth month of the year. This name refers to the freshwater fish that was easily caught at this time of year and served as food for the indigenous peoples of the region.

Perseid Star Shower: A Celestial Spectacular

Another highlight of August is the Perseid meteor showerone of the most anticipated meteor showers of the year. The Perseids are caused by debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle and are known for their high meteor rate. Under optimal conditions, more than 60 meteors per hour can be observed.

In 2024, the Perseid meteor activity began on July 14 and will continue until September 1, with its peak activity expected on the nights of August 12 and 13. During this peak, the skies of Guatemala are expected to offer an impressive spectacle, with the possibility of observing between 50 and 75 meteors per hour.

What are the best atmospheric conditions for observing astronomical events?

The best atmospheric conditions for observing celestial phenomena include clear skies and an atmosphere free of pollutants. Sky clarity is crucial, as clouds and haze can obstruct the view of celestial phenomena. Additionally, it is ideal to observe in a location away from city lights, where light pollution is minimal. Low humidity is also beneficial, as it reduces light scattering and improves image sharpness.

Moonless nights, known as New Moon nights, are best for this type of observation, as the darkness allows celestial bodies to be more visible.
