Calendar of astronomical events for September 2024 in Guatemala

September 2024 promises to be a vibrant month for astronomy enthusiasts. With a number of outstanding astronomical events, from the second supermoon of the year up to a partial lunar eclipsethe month offers numerous opportunities to observe the sky.

September 7-8: Opposition of Saturn, an opportunity to see it at its brightest

Between September 7 and 8, Saturn will reach opposition, an astronomical phenomenon in which the Earth is positioned directly between the Sun and the ringed planet. This alignment, in which Saturn is in the opposite position to the Sun from the perspective of our planet, is what gives this event its name.

This event provides a rare view of Saturn, which will be seen at its brightest. During opposition, the ringed planet will be magnitude 0.6, appearing as a prominent yellow dot in the night sky. Observers with a telescope of at least 4 inches will be able to enjoy a detailed view of the planet’s iconic rings.

In addition, the Seeliger effect will enhance the visibility of the rings. This phenomenon occurs when sunlight shines directly on the rings, making them shine more intensely due to multiple reflections. Opposition will be reached at 10:27 p.m. —Guatemala time— on September 7, allowing you to enjoy this phenomenon during the night and early morning of September 8.

September 17: Super Full Harvest Moon

The Full Harvest Moon, the name given to the Full moon closest to the autumn equinoxwill be visible on September 18 at 2:34 UTC —Coordinated Universal Time—, that is, at 8:34 p.m. September 17 in GuatemalaThis event gets its name from agricultural traditions, as the additional light provided by this full moon allowed farmers to extend their harvest days before the arrival of winter.

In September 2024, the Harvest Moon will also be a supermoonthe second of three expected for the year. Unlike other full moons, this one will rise above the horizon shortly after sunset for several days in a row, providing consecutive nights of brilliant light.

September 17: Partial Lunar Eclipse

On the same day as the Harvest Moon, a partial lunar eclipse will occur, the last of the year. During a partial eclipse, the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, but it does not completely cover the Moon. Only a portion of the moon will enter the Earth’s shadow, known as the umbra, causing only a section of the Moon to be darkened.

This eclipse will be visible in America, Europe and Africa, and will last just over an hour. The eclipse will begin at 8:12 p.m. and end at 9:16 p.m. Guatemala time, providing a unique opportunity to observe this celestial phenomenon in combination with the Full Harvest Moon.

September 22: Autumn Equinox

September 22 marks the autumn equinox 2024marking the transition from astronomical summer to autumn. Although this shift is not related to weather conditions, but rather to the Earth’s position in its orbit around the Sun, it is a significant time to observe the balance between daylight and dark hours. During the equinox, the Sun will be aligned directly over the equator, resulting in nearly equal amounts of daylight and nighttime light around the world.

For the northern hemisphere, where Guatemala is located, this equinox marks the beginning of the shortening of the days and the lengthening of the nights, while in the southern hemisphere the opposite occurs. Astronomically, it is a prelude to the winter solstice, which will occur in December, when the Earth’s tilt favors solar illumination towards the south.
