Saint Ierotheos Bishop of Athens
Agios Ierotheos was a Platonic philosopher and one of the nine members of the Senate Council of the Supreme Court. After the Apostle Paul accepted and taught the faith of Christ, he was ordained as the first bishop of Athens. His pupil was Saint Dionysios the Areopagite (see 3 October), who praises his teacher in his writings.
According to Saint.gr, he slept peacefully in his old age, after many years of pastoral activity and writing. His holy body is kept in the monastery of the same name in Megara, Attica. His remains are also preserved on Mount Athos (IM St. Paul) and in the church of Agios Andreas (Archdiocese of Athens).
M. Galanos says in the Sanaxarist that Hierotheos could have learned the Christian faith from the Apostle Paul, because the Fathers expressly state that Dionysius was the person who believed in the teachings of the Apostle Paul. But even if he was still an Areopagite or more importantly, the first bishop of the church of Athens, could such a wonderful physiognomy be omitted to be included simply in the general expression “others also believed”?
That is why it is more logical – M. Galanos continues – to assume that Ierotheos probably believed after Dionysius and taught him, after Paul left Athens. However things are, Hierotheos was certainly a man of great social education, he became the first bishop of Athens and he worked for his flock with great faith and enthusiasm. In fact, according to some traditions, Hierotheos was also present during the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Jerusalem (August 15).
They also celebrate the holy martyr Domnini and his daughters Berniki and Prosdoki, as well as Saint Audactos and his daughter Callistheni.
