Far-right former Romanian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu was detained for 24 hours and placed under investigation on September 21. Authorities accuse him of leading a criminal group that defrauded a businessman of over €1.1 million ($1.26 million) through fake foreign loan guarantees meant to fund political campaigns.
Romanian law enforcement officials intercepted Georgescu while he was heading toward a gym in the Otopeni area, according to detailed police accounts. Rather than letting him continue his morning routine, investigators redirected the former candidate straight to his villa in Mogoșoaia, an affluent suburb north of Bucharest.

The total documented damage from this single enterprise surpassed 1.1 million euros, with portions of the funds allegedly earmarked for precious metal investments and financing political operations.

Georgescu vaulted onto the international stage as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential election, securing a surprise first-place finish in the initial round.
