Call to action for Guineematin in the name of principles (Tribune) – Aminata.com The information in Guinea and in the world

For nearly a month, access to the guineematin.com information site has been restricted. Without a means of circumvention, in particular by VPN, this media with a large audience is almost unavailable on Guinean territory. This situation should remobilize all the press after steps have so far yielded nothing concrete.

The right to information of thousands of citizens and the daily commitment of a whole team of journalists to enjoy their freedom of the press to inform their compatriots have been sabotaged. Twice, on behalf of all the press associations, authorities at the highest level were challenged to put an end to this restriction.

This is the place to congratulate President Amadou Tham Camara, President of the press association of which Guineematin is a member, for his many steps. I encourage him to continue his commendable efforts.

The General Administration of Guineematin.Com claims to have taken the step towards certain Internet service providers who have all rejected any responsibility. It wouldn’t be a problem with the host either. It is therefore very likely that Guineematin is simply a victim of someone’s unfair decision to close it on Guinean territory for a duration that only the person knows. But this is unacceptable and should stop now!

On a personal note, I call on the Ministry of Information and Communication, the High Authority for Communication (HAC), our two representatives on the National Council for the Transition (CNT), our former journalist colleagues close to the President of the transition and any defender of the right to information of our fellow citizens, and asks them to act according to legal means. There can be no ministry, journalist or regulatory body, let alone the right to information, without the media. It is therefore an existential question that we should no longer continue to circumvent.

Without pretending to accuse, I would like to provide additional information for anyone wishing to take an interest in it and help find a solution. This restriction of which Guineematin is the victim comes only a few months after an outcry from the entire press against a wave of restrictions which several media in the country have suffered. The main defendant was the minister spokesperson for the government, who is also minister in charge of telecommunications and the digital economy. Structures under his supervision had been strongly questioned. These include the Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ARPT).

The same minister had provoked indignation after public statements threatening to close media outlets while the High Authority for Communication (HAC) is the media regulatory body in Guinea.

Also, to date, no court decision or the High Authority for Communication (HAC) has been notified to the General Administration of Guineematin on any shortcoming that the media is accused of and which would lead to the current situation of this widely followed news site.

To those who might be wondering about the possibility of a media being technically closed by the authorities, I would remind you that a few years ago, access to a media belonging to a Senegalese colleague was not long in being blocked on Guinean territory when the authorities of our country so wanted.
