Anteaters are specialized predators of ants and termites.
They are generally docile creatures that pose no threat to man or other animals.
However, the transformation of natural ecosystems, as a consequence of the expansion of agricultural frontiers, has affected native species such as the anteater.

The anteater is an ancient mammal native to central and southern America, although it has disappeared from some Central American countries.

It is a distant relative of armadillos and sloths, and is known for its long snout, small mouth, small ears, and dense fur.

The anteater’s habitat is varied and can be found in both moist and dry forests, swamps, savannahs and grasslands.

It feeds mainly on ants and termites, which it extracts from its mounds using its powerful claws and long, sticky tongue.

Anteater reproduction is not seasonal and gestation lasts about 190 days.
The newborn clings to the mother’s fur and rides on her back for about a year before becoming independent1.

The anteater is a solitary animal and spends most of its time searching for food.

It has a keen sense of smell, which it uses to locate its prey.

The anteater is not aggressive, but can become violent if it feels threatened.

It uses its sharp claws to defend itself against predators, such as pumas and jaguars.

The anteater is found in Colombia in different types of habitats such as dry forests and savannahs of the Orinoquia and the Caribbean region, specifically in Casanare and other departments of the eastern plains of the country as well as the Colombian Massif.
