The research study enrolled 90 obese adults in the Chicago area and randomly divided them into three groups. One group limited their food intake to eight hours a day, while another group counted calories and aimed for a 25% reduction. The third group served as a comparison without any intervention.

After a year-long observation period, it was found that the participants in the intermittent fasting group consumed an average of 425 fewer calories per day, while those in the calorie restriction group consumed 405 fewer calories per day. The results showed that both groups lost a similar amount of weight, with no statistically significant difference.

This study aligns with a previous study conducted in China, which also found that intermittent fasting and calorie restriction alone did not have a significant difference in weight loss outcomes. Both studies suggest that the way in which calorie reduction is achieved does not matter as much as the calorie reduction itself.

The current study from the University of Illinois also noted that intermittent fasting may be easier for some people, as it eliminates the need for calorie counting. However, there were no statistically significant differences in waist circumference, body fat percentage, blood pressure, or other metabolic risk factors between the two groups.
