Riyadh: Camels that have undergone cosmetic surgery have been banned from participating in the annual camel beauty pageant in Saudi Arabia.
The International Camel Festival is held annually in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The winner of the camel race, which will be held in the name of King Abdullah, will be awarded a prize of US $ 66 million. To this end, camel owners from many Mediterranean countries to Riyadh will be interested in attending the event. The Saudi government benefits from this exhibition.
Prizes will be given to the best performing dogs at the dog show as well as to the camels that have been given the best fodder at this camel show. These camels are popular because of the occasional media exposure on them.
But there are some rules to participate in this competition. Only camels from recognized camel breeds will be selected to participate in this competition. Camels operated on like this are prohibited from participating in the competition. This is why the camels will be X-rayed with medical equipment before the competition starts. In 2018, 12 camels who underwent cosmetic surgery were banned from participating in the competition. Currently 40 camels in 2021 have been denied permission to compete for the same reason.
Many human rights activists in Saudi Arabia are now accusing camel owners of slaughtering animals in order to win the prize money. They also said that the Saudi government should take appropriate action. It has gone viral.
