Cameras on uniforms reduced São Paulo police lethality by 40%

With the camera on the uniform, the PM is encouraged to follow protocols and act transparently and without transgressions. But, despite the good results in São Paulo, in Rio de Janeiro, the government resists the idea.

The PM from Rio de Janeiro says that there are, yes, cameras in use, but, unlike in São Paulo, they are not present in the elite units or in the battalions with the highest lethality rates.

Last year, the state appealed against a decision by the Supreme Court that determined a schedule for the installation of cameras in these battalions and units.

Police lethality in Rio de Janeiro is 20 times higher than in São Paulo

Rio de Janeiro is the state with the most records of deaths in police interventions in the country. A survey carried out by the state’s Public Security Institute and the Public Security Secretariat of São Paulo pointed out that the Rio de Janeiro police have a lethality rate almost 20 times higher than that of the neighboring state of São Paulo.

In 2022, in Rio, there were 39,000 arrested and 1,300 killed by the police. São Paulo, which had four times as many prisoners, registered a fifth of the deaths.

That is, for every thousand prisoners, less than two deaths in São Paulo and more than 22 in Rio. Almost 20 times more.

One of the explanations for this discrepancy is the bloody clashes provoked by the frequent use of rifles by factions in Rio. This year, 141 have already been apprehended in the state. In São Paulo, there were 26.
