Director of ‘Terminator’ and ‘Avatar’
Amid controversy over AI taking over jobs in the film industry
“Anything is possible, including AI and supervision.
“Acting that comes from life is not enough.”
“Artificial intelligence (AI) may one day become a movie director, but it cannot surpass Arnold Schwarzenegger (star of the movie ‘The Terminator’).”
James Cameron, a world-famous film director famous for films such as ‘The Terminator’ and ‘Avatar,’ said, “One day, an advanced AI system will be able to perform the director’s job.” However, he said AI cannot replace actors who deliver unique performances based on experience.
In an interview with the British Financial Times (FT) reported on the 27th (local time), Director Cameron said, “If there is an artificial general intelligence (AGI) with self and consciousness, who can say that it is not an artist?” and “We “I have been making art since I became conscious, so wouldn’t AGI be able to do anything, including writing scripts and directing?”
Open AI, the developer of the generative AI ‘ChatGPT’, introduced ‘Sora’ earlier this year, saying, “It creates videos with text (sentences).” At first glance, it is difficult to distinguish a video made with a conch from a live action video.
Regarding this technology, Cameron said, “Everyone is excited about the ability to snap a finger and get a great image, but you can’t make a movie with it. This technology has potential, but we’re not there yet.” He said. Still, he said AI technology could reduce routine tasks associated with film production, allowing directors to shoot more scenes in less time. Director Cameron’s ‘Avatar: Path of Water’, which was previously released in 2022, took 13 years to work on.
Director Cameron also predicted that AI will not be able to replace actors. He pointed out, “Machines can show believable acting, but they cannot match the special creative moments that come from the life experiences of human actors,” and “AI can provide images, but it cannot provide emotions.” The FT commented, “Director Cameron has an open mind about the role of AI in film production, but he does not think AI can act like a human.”
This interview comes as conflict continues over the use of AI in Hollywood. Last year, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Actors and Broadcasters Union (SAG-AFTRA) went on strike for the first time in 63 years, claiming that AI was taking away jobs from writers and actors.
