According to the newspaper, Cameron has not even had a chance to meet with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, who can theoretically put the aid bill to a vote.

During a private dinner at Trump’s Florida residence “Mar-a-Lago”, Cameron called on Trump to admit that it is in the interests of the United States that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin does not receive an award for seizing Ukrainian lands.

Cameron had hoped that Trump would signal a change of course, at least easing his way to a meeting with the House speaker.

At a joint press conference, Cameron and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken repeated their call for Congress to unblock aid.

“Future generations can look back at us and say, did we do enough when this country was taken over by a dictator who tried to forcefully redraw the borders? Did we heed the lessons of history? And did we do enough,” Cameron said.

However, the British minister’s arguments – both rational and emotional – ran afoul of the power struggle within the US Republican Party, according to “The Guardian”.

Radical Republicans who oppose aid to Ukraine are threatening Johnson with impeachment if he votes on the aid package.

Trump’s campaign staff said that during the dinner with Cameron, they discussed issues such as “the upcoming US and UK elections, political issues related to Brexit, the need for NATO countries to meet their defense spending commitments and stopping the killing in Ukraine.”
